In 2004, it was estimated that 900,000 people would suffer an AMI, and that approximately a staggering 42% of those AMI patients would die within one year. Advances in the pharmacologic and mechanical reperfusion strategies continue to emerge and in 2004, the ACC/AHA Guidelines for the Management of STEMI were revised in an effort to reflect the newer important data specific to treatment, timing and transport of STEMI patients. This program will address the recent guideline revisions, discuss rationale and strategies for establishing a regional STEMI network and reflect on the benefits of GP IIb/IIIa inhibition in the setting of AMI.
